Garda und Surrondings

Garda is a small town on the shore of Lake Garda, in the province of Verona.

Its name probably comes from the Germanic "Warte", that means "guard of the castle". Originally, the name, identified the medieval castle located on the hill above Garda. The castle was so important to give its name to the lake, the ancient Benacus.

The area, though not so vast, holds historic and artistic treasures. The old village, overlooking the lake, is located in a patch of land between the small harbour and the town walls and is characterized by narrow alleys and ancient buildings such as the Palazzo dei Capitani.

The "La Rocca", the hill located between Garda and Bardolino, offers to the trakking and bike lovers, several routs and at the same time a fantastic landscape. Besides to the ruins of the Torre di Garda, where in medioeval times the Queen Regina Adelaide, widow of the King of Italy, was locked, it can be find the Eremo dei Camaldolesi, a monastery built at the end of 600, and visitable only for the part of the Church of San Giorgio.

For lovers of nature and sports another must-see is the Valle dei Mulini, a 7 km long trail that runs through the valley carved by the river Gusa-Tesina.

At the extreme north of the Gulf of Garda there is Punta San Vigilio, a small and charming peninsula owned by the Counts Guarienti di Brenzone. Inside you can find a natural park that offers to adults and children the pleasure to walk in a beautiful natural setting and the opportunity to dive in the waters of the Baia delle Sirene. Going ahead from the park you find the Locanda San Vigilioand the Bar Taverna with its small private harbour, and walking on, along the path of cypresses, you can reach Villa Canossa, a fifteenth-century building of Sanmicheli.
